Adenoid cystic carcinoma - Highlights
Adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) is an aggressive salivary gland neoplasm, reported to be the second most common malignant salivary gland tumor after Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC).
However, there are also reports which say AdCC is the 5th most common malignant salivary gland tumor.
📝Here are some "Highlights" or a high level overview of Adenoid cystic carcinoma
AdCC was previously called "Cylindroma", a term that is no more used to refer to AdCC.
AdCC is known to mostly occur on the minor salivary glands. Among minor salivary glands, the palate is the most common site.
AdCC of the parotid gland could cause facial nerve paralysis (nerve invasion).
AdCC manifests in three different patterns histologically -> 1) Cribriform pattern, 2) Tubular pattern, 3) Solid pattern
Among the three patterns, cribriform type is know to have the best prognosis and the solid type, the worst prognosis, in terms of distant metastasis and long-term survival.
